EMS response total reaches 278

SMITHSBURG - In March, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to 99 calls for service, bringing the 2006 total to 278 as of the end of the month.

Of the 99 calls, 14 were to the Leitersburg area, 16 in Smithsburg, 15 to Frederick County, Md., 10 in Hagerstown and nine in the Mount Aetna area.

According to Capt. James Ulrich, four patients were flown out by helicopter during March - two to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and two to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The number of patients taken to area hospitals was 68.

During March, EMS personnel assisted the fire company on four calls. There also were two ATV accidents in March.
