Western Heights

Western Heights Middle School recently hosted what it hopes to be the first of many expert speakers in order to assist parents and staff in the challenges they face.

Mark Martin, a clinical social worker at Brook Lane Psychiatric Center, treated those in attendance with a look at what he termed "The First Middle Age: Helping your Middle Schooler Thrive" and provided assistance on assuring parental priorities are in line.

The following tips were outlined to assist children during what can be a confusing and difficult time in their lives:

1.) Put marriage and family first.

2.) Develop and practice strong family traditions.

3.) Encourage your child to participate in positive peer opportunities (church youth groups, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H, etc.)

4.) Assist your child to develop new skills or interests (sports, music, arts).

5.) Encourage extracurricular activities (instrumental lessons, art classes).

6.) Identify and manage emotions (best times to strike up a conversation with your child - while riding in a car or at bedtime).

7.) Empower with role playing; assist your child by identifying allies and provide examples of how best to address a difficult situation - avoid questions and instead use statements to encourage communication.

8.) Teach tolerance.

9.) Lead by example.

10.) Lobby for change.
