4-H tractor club presents awards in Chambersburg

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - More than 200 4-H Tractor Club members and parents met for the annual awards banquet at the 4th Street Church of the Brethren.

The family-style dinner was planned to recognize project club winners and to complete the annual winter program. This was the last meeting in 2006.

Jere Wingert, Penn State Cooperative Extension educator and program coordinator, conducted the meeting. A Safety Day video was shown.

Then a ribbon was given to each member showing how well he or she did on their project book. Third-year members received a trophy for graduation from the tractor club.

Byer's Tire Service of Chambersburg sponsored the trophies for the graduates and Meyers' Implements of Greencastle, Pa., sponsored the yearly class winners with tool sets.

Dale Martin taught the first-year group and awarded first place to Glen Garber of Chambersburg. Corbin Sipe of Fayetteville, Pa., was awarded second place, and Clement Slothour of Chambersburg was awarded third place.

Roger and Kevin Dice taught the second-year group and awarded first place to Cortley Knepper of Chambersburg. Joshua Hess of Chambersburg was awarded second place, and Brandon Harshman of Chambersburg was awarded third place.

Michael Slothour taught the third-year group and awarded Joel Hess of Orrstown, Pa., first place. Kendall Lesher of Chambersburg was awarded second place, and Andrew Brechbill of Chambersburg was awarded third place.

Appreciation was expressed to Wingert and the 4-H leaders for their teaching the groups how a tractor works and about tractor safety. Thanks also was given to the tractor dealers/agribusinesses in Franklin County for the use of their facilities and for providing refreshments.

In all, 53 club members were enrolled in the three-year program.
