April 04, 2006|by DAN KAUFFMAN

BOONSBORO - Monday's MVAL Antietam baseball game between Williamsport and Boonsboro was suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning due to lightning, with the Wildcats holding a 6-3 lead.

Boonsboro (2-1, 1-0) had a runner on first with one out when the umpires halted the game. It will be completed when the Warriors travel to Williamsport (3-2, 1-0) on April 24.

Williamsport scored six unearned runs in the top of the sixth after Boonsboro committed an error with two outs. RBI doubles by A.J. Jamison and Tyler Beard, a two-run single by Derek Hadley and an RBI single by Zach Myers highlighted the inning.

Boonsboro took a 2-0 lead in the second. Kyle Kane doubled and scored on Tim Cole's RBI single, with Cole also scoring on the play on a throwing error. The Warriors made it 3-0 in the third when Cody Poffenberger reached base on a bunt single, stole second and scored on the play as a result of a pair of throwing errors.

Williamsport starter Jason Sutherland was still on the hill when play was stopped. He pitched 5 1/3 innings Monday, allowing the three runs - two unearned - on four hits, hitting three batters and walking one while striking out five on the strength of a good fastball.

Boonsboro starter Zac Shifler allowed no earned runs in his 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits - just three before the sixth inning - two walks and one hit batter while fanning five, changing speeds effectively.
