Boonsboro, Smithsburg, Clear Spring FFA members excel

FFA members from Boonsboro, Smithsburg and Clear Spring participated in the Maryland FFA Region 1 Public Speaking Career Development Events recently at Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Md.

The top four FFA members in each event will go on to represent Region 1 in the Maryland FFA Public Speaking Career Events at the State FFA Convention in April.

In the Creed Speaking Event, 9th grade students recited the FFA Creed and responded to questions from the judges.

Placing first was Kara Chaney of the Fort Hill FFA Chapter. J.D. Repp of the Clear Spring FFA finished in second place, Rachael Martin of the Smithsburg FFA placed third, Becky Price from Fort Hill FFA placed fourth and April Thompson of the Boonsboro FFA placed fifth.

In the Prepared Public Speaking events, students wrote and presented a six- to eight-minute speech about an agricultural topic. Students are judged on their speaking ability, manuscript and response to questions from the judges.

In the junior division, Amy Ridenour of the Clear Spring FFA placed first with her speech entitled "The Changing Faces of the FFA".

Phil Schkuraft from Smithsburg FFA finished in second place, Megan Lantz of the Boonsboro FFA placed third and Rob Veil of the Smithsburg FFA placed fourth.

In the senior division, Becky Funk of the Clear Spring FFA placed first with her speech entitled "Biofuels: Fueling the Future".

Finishing second and third from the Clear Spring FFA were Brenna House and Sondra Lavigne. Sammy Spencer of the Boonsboro FFA placed fourth.

Also participating from Clear Spring were Katrina Hendershot, D.J. Shirley and Steven Divelbiss. Also representing the Boonsboro FFA were Sam Elliott and Megan Thompson.

Extemporaneous Public Speaking challenges FFA members to think on their feet. Members choose an agricultural topic at random and have 30 minutes to prepare a four- to six-minute speech.

Members are judged on their presentation of information relating to the topic and response to questions from the judges.

In the junior division, Boonsboro FFA member Andrew Griffith finished first.

C.J. Ridenour of the Clear Spring FFA placed second and Kristen Jennings also from the Boonsboro FFA placed third.

In the senior division, Clear Spring member Hannah Smith placed first, Marie Perrin and Jamie Snider from the Fort Hill FFA Chapter finished in second and third place, respectfully, and Jamie Beckley of the Clear Spring FFA placed fourth.

Also participating were Clear Spring's Katherine McCormick and Derek Hanes, Southern Garrett's Jennifer Steyer and Randi Bennett, and Boonsboro's Vickie Humus.
