New name for new section

April 04, 2006|by CHRIS COPLEY

The section formerly known as Next has a new name - Pulse.

The revamped section launched Feb. 14, when we asked Tri-State-area teens to submit names. We received more than 300 suggestions, narrowed those down and asked for further help via a reader vote.

Following staff discussion and readers voting for their favorite names, Pulse made the cut - thanks to Ashley Kendle of Hagerstown. She wins an iPod nano, which was offered as a reward to the person submitting the name selected for the teen section.

Other readers sent in names such as Teen Pulse, but Ashley is the only qualifying contestant who suggested the more basic and more popular name.

Ashley, a 16-year-old junior from North Hagerstown High School, submitted Pulse as one of four suggestions for the section's new name. Daughter of Gerard and Vonda Ken-dle, Ashley said she felt Pulse reflected the look and content of the section.

A group of teenagers helped redesign the weekly teen section. They based suggestions on the results of surveys of Washington County students. Teen writers generate the majority of the content, which focuses on teen lifestyles and entertainment.

"It's new, it's different, and it's current," Ashley said. "I like reading about people I know in the paper."

She also likes the way the paper keeps on top of current trends in fashion and music.

Ashley was happy to claim her prize. This is her first iPod, and she'll make use of it.

"I'm definitely going to keep it," she said. "I like to listen to everything, except rap and country."
