Two benefit auctions planned

Retired Lt. Denny Stouffer was one of Jeffery Alan Wroten's supervisors and worked the same shift at Roxburry Correctional Institution for two years.

When Wroten was killed while guarding an inmate in January, Stouffer said he and other correctional officers realized how easily it could have been them.

Stouffer, a professional auctioneer and owner of Stouffer's Auction & Real Estate Co., will hold two auctions in May to raise money for Wroten's five children.

"This is a very special auction," he said.

The first "We Care" auction will be May 6 at 10 a.m. at Miss Irene's Day Care Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. The second auction, May 8 at 6 p.m. at Four Points Sheraton in Hagerstown, will include big-ticket items, like passes to NASCAR races, trips and dinner with public officials, Stouffer said.

"These will be more intangible items," he said. "If someone has frequent flyer miles they can transfer, we'll sell those."

Stouffer said all items will be donated, and he is hoping to gather at least 200 items for the May 8 auction.

"Donations. That's what's going to make this work," he said.

He has an empty trailer waiting to be filled with items for the May 6 auction.

Stouffer said the May 6 auction will include donated personal property, like dishes, furniture, motorcycles and other items.

"We'll sell it," he said. "It doesn't matter."

The money raised will be put into trusts for Wroten's children. Stouffer said he anticipates that the money will be used to meet the children's daily needs.

"We want to set up a fund to administer their immediate and near needs," he said. "We're going to at least get them all up to college age."

Correctional officers from several area institutions are participating in the planning for both auctions.

"This is a community," he said. "It's men and women who put their lives on the line."

Stouffer said he is hoping to have 200 items available for the larger auction, May 8. Tickets for dinner cost $30; additional donations are welcome.
