Labor council to note Workers Memorial Day

April 02, 2006

The Central Maryland AFL-CIO Council, along with affiliates across the nation, will observe Workers Memorial Day on Friday, April 28.

The local observance will begin with a program at 10 a.m. at the council's headquarters at 511 E. Franklin St. in Hagerstown.

Those who are to speak at the ceremony include local and state political figures.

The event is designed to pay tribute to those who have suffered and died on the job. It will honor the miners who lost their lives in the Sago mine in West Virginia and Jeffery Alan Wroten, a correctional officer at Roxbury Correctional Institution south of Hagerstown, who was fatally shot while guarding an inmate at Washington County Hospital.

The public is invited to attend. Members of the public also may submit names of deceased people they would like to have included in the reading of the journal.
