Mail Call

"I feel that since I am way past 21, and divorced for more than four years now, I don't have to get anyone's permission to go where I want to go. It's really irritating that I can't go out in public without people acting as if I shouldn't be there. When I go to a restaurant, I get stares from people. This is supposed to be a free country, and a person is supposed to be able to go out and do what they want in life to a certain extent, within the law. I think a lot of people just go out to see what they can stick their noses into. I realize that life would be really boring for them if they didn't."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Can someone please explain to me how people who don't work can go out and buy a new expensive car? I've worked all my life, and I've had the same car for eight years. Maybe there's something I'm missing. I need to know, so maybe I can get a new car."

"I'd like to know what groundhogs do with their dirt when they dig their tunnels. Does anybody know?"

"I think we should annex part of Mexico, and use that nice warm climate to plant food on the land. "

- Williamsport

"Did anyone witness the accident at Halfway Boulevard and Virginia Avenue on Sunday evening, March 26? Please call me at 240-527-9959."

"This is to the Hagerstown caller from the March 29, Morning Herald who said it was nonsense about a border between Mexico and the U.S. I doubt that the 1.5 million he's talking about who live in Mexico are living on Mexican welfare, and that is what is happening here. Taxpayers have to pay for their medical care, for their babies born here, food stamps and all the goodies that come from having kids when you can't afford them. Thirty-three percent of people in federal prisons are illegals from over the border. If you don't mind paying taxes for these people, fine."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"I'm calling regarding the county tax cap that was supposed to be lowered recently by the Washington County Commissioners. They say rebates and tax credits are not likely in the future. Commissioner John Munson proposed a rebate to landowners, but now they say this would be a nightmare. Why would it be a nightmare? They have records of who has county residence. They promise the taxpayers everything, and it turns out to be nothing. By 2008, they'll probably raise taxes by 25 percent."

- Maugansville

"When I was a young boy, I used to run around with a guy named Billy Jones in the West End. I lost track of him when I went into the service in 1945, and I haven't seen him since. Does anybody know of his whereabouts or if he's still living? I'm very interested, because he and I were very close as kids."

- Hagerstown

"This is about the recent comment that someone saw a bright object in the sky on Saturday. I saw it too, and I saw little green men flying in the air. I think we're being invaded by Mars."

- Washington County

"I read your newspaper and I subscribe to it. I just want to say that the White House of cards is tumbling down. Until they get rid of Bush, Cheney, Rice and Rumsfeld, we will not have a safe country. Thank you very much, and keep up the good work."

- Hagerstown

"This is to our elected officials. Please explain to me why illegal aliens are not illegal. Send them home. I don't see where the problem is."

- Williamsport

"I just read in the paper about having to remove an Easter display so as not to offend anyone. I will always offend somebody, because I will always wish someone a Happy Easter and a Merry Christmas. It's all about God, and God will never be taken out of America."

- Hagerstown

"This is regarding the ongoing discussion in You Said It relative to correctional officers' jobs and salaries. No one forced these people to become correctional officers, nor are they forced to keep that job. It is undeniably a very dangerous job, but let's be honest about it. If they're unhappy about the job, they should leave. They certainly are entitled to more money, but stop complaining and do something about it to better yourself."

- Hagerstown

"I would like to mention a wonderful nonprofit organization for animals of any kind. It's called Angel Hill (Animal) Sanctuary, and is on Warm Spring Road in Chambersburg, Pa. There is a 'no questions asked' policy and a no-kill policy. The lady who runs it is very attached to all the animals, yet she tries to find them decent homes. We need to control the pet population. There are a lot of wonderful dogs and cats that need homes. I just rescued a Sheltie from her, and he is wonderful. Please be kind to animals. God told us to do that in the Bible."

- Chambersburg, Pa.

"Union workers making $27 to $30 an hour are low-income, and they are just getting along. People making $5 to $10 an hour think they are doing well, when they are really in poverty. Why should the companies get most of the profits and not share it with the workers?"

- Clear Spring

"I'm calling about the many corrections in the obituaries in the paper lately. I'm wondering if anything could be done about it."

- Warfordsburg, Pa.
