Women report being shot at while driving in Funkstown

March 29, 2006

Two women reported being shot at Monday night while driving in Funkstown.

There were no injuries, but there was damage to both vehicles, police said.

A window of a pickup truck was shot out as its driver - a pregnant woman - drove past Funkstown Town Hall, according to a news release from the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

An air rifle and ammunition were found abandoned in some brush next to Town Hall at 30 E. Baltimore St., deputies said.

The woman heard a "loud popping noise" about 8:30 p.m., the release states. Her passenger-side window shattered as she drove past Town Hall, and she drove to the Funkstown Fire Hall for help.

A second woman came forward Tuesday, apparently a victim of a similar incident, Deputy P. Kemmerer said.

The woman was driving in the same direction as the first woman at the same time, he said. The woman said she heard the noise, but thought a rock had hit her car. On Tuesday, she realized that the passenger side mirror of her vehicle had been shot.

"There certainly could be more people," he said.

By late Tuesday, there were no suspects, but deputies had received several calls from citizens with possible tips.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call 301-791-3020.
