COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Potomac State 6-5, HCC 4-19

Hagerstown Community College had seven straight batters reach base to ignite a 13-run first inning en route to a 4 1/2 inning rout in the nightcap of a Region XX doubleheader with Potomac State.

Jess Stough singled, Heather Taylor doubled and Nina Chiaruttini tripled - each driving in two runs - in the batting stretch that started after one out. Karey Toms added a two-run double in the inning as the Hawks (9-4) jumped to the 13-0 lead in the first.

The early outburst was a form of redemption for HCC, which lost the opener in eight innings after playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation. Potomac State scored five runs in the eighth during the international tiebreaker rule - which starts the inning with a runner at second base. Sarah Bittnger's two-run double brought home the winning runs for Potomac State.

HCC battled back with three runs, highlighted by Tanya Blair's RBI single, followed by Jenna Clark's run-scoring triple. The Hawks left the tying runs stranded on first and second base.

The split leaves HCC with a 4-1 record in Region XX games.
