Winter Street students and staff raise money for widow

March 27, 2006

Winter Street Elementary School students and staff raised more than $3,400 to provide assistance to Martha Yost. She is the widow of Doug Yost, known by students and staff as "Mr. Doug," longtime custodian at Winter Street, who passed away in December.

The students were promised that a number of male teachers would wear dresses to school if the students reached certain donation levels. Fourth-grader Hunter Hartman collected the most individual contributions, totaling $450, which was matched by Allegany Driving School.

Martha Yost accepted a check for the total contributions at a ceremony at the school on March 10.

Hunter Hartman; physical education teacher Dean Hamburg; third-grade teacher Anthony McDowell; Martha Yost; and fourth-grade teacher Jeremy Golden all wore dresses.
