Suspect in burglary dies after struggle

March 26, 2006

A burglary suspect collapsed Friday night after running across U.S. 40 and later died at Washington County Hospital, according to a written release from the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

The man, whose name was not released, had been seen walking on U.S. 40 in the area of Burkholder Lane shortly after a reported 9:30 p.m. burglary at Blaine Window and Hardware at 12421 McDade Road west of Hagerstown, the release states.

The man matched the description of the burglar, so two deputies and two Maryland State Police troopers approached him, according to the release. He allegedly was uncooperative and ran across U.S. 40, at which point he collapsed, according to the release.

"After a struggle, he was handcuffed," according to the release. "The officers went to get him off the ground and found him to be unconscious."
