March 23, 2006

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Staying Tobacco Free, a program coordinated by Summit Health, is organizing A Kick Butts Day Shoe drive through April 10.

The group's goal is to collect 600 pairs of shoes, in good condition or gently worn, throughout Franklin County to recognize National Kick Butts Day on April 5.

The shoes will be taken to Harrisburg, Pa., on April 25 and 26 when Franklin County youth will gather to promote awareness of the dangers of tobacco by taking part in the Youth Quest 2006 Rally. A total of 20,000 pairs of shoes, collected throughout Pennsylvania, will be placed on the capitol steps to represent the number of adults who die in Pennsylvania each year from tobacco- related illnesses. All shoes will be donated to charitable organizations after the rally.

Shoes can be dropped off at the following Chambersburg locations: The Chambersburg Memorial YMCA, 570 E. McKinley St.; The Eugene C. Clarke Jr. Community Center, 235 S. Third St.; and Penn State Cooperative Extension in Franklin County , 181 Franklin Farm Lane. Shoes may also be dropped off at the Penn State Mont Alto Multipurpose Activities Center on the Penn State Mont Alto campus in Mont Alto, Pa.
