March 21, 2006

Think you can do better than Grammy-winning "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" or "Gold Digger"?

Do you have a story to tell?

Try your hand at writing lyrics and a chance to win $50 in The Herald-Mail's annual lyric-writing contest.

Here are the rules:

  • Submit a recording of someone singing (or rapping) your lyrics to music. Include a written copy of the lyrics.

  • Contest is open to individuals ages 12 through 18 who live in Washington and Frederick counties in Maryland, Franklin and Fulton counties in Pennsylvania and Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties in West Virginia.

  • Work must be 100-percent original.

  • All musical genres welcome.

  • Use of profanity or subject matter unfit for publication in a family newspaper will disqualify contestants.

  • Enter up to three lyrics set to the same or different tunes.

  • Herald-Mail employees and their relatives are not eligible to win.

Mail or bring your entry to The Herald-Mail, 100 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, MD, 21740, by noon Wednesday, April 19. The winning lyrics and a photograph of the songwriter will be published in an upcoming teen section.
