Hog calling and more this Saturday

March 21, 2006

ANNAPOLIS - Bring family and friends to a favorite springtime event - the Maryland Department of Agriculture's open house Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is no admission fee for the event, which will be held rain or shine at the agency's headquarters, 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis.

This year's open house theme, "Farm to City Celebration," highlights the link between rural and urban residents and land use, as well as the state agency's role in protecting consumers, the environment and food supply.

Visitors can see the department's insect collection, make slime in the state chemist's laboratory, go to a Maryland food and craft market, play in a children's straw maze, demonstrate their hog-calling skills, take in a petting farm, ride a pony and learn about agriculture through hands-on activities.
