Hawkins blows through C'burg

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.

Jaron Hawkins of Frostburg, Md., said the winds are always howling where he lives.

He certainly seemed prepared for Saturday's 27th annual Chambersburg Half Marathon, which was no small breeze anyway with its infamously hilly 13.1 miles of country roads.

"The wind was a killer today," said Hawkins, who also was deadly, winning the race in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 34 seconds. Matt Wagoner, 28, of New Cumberland, Pa., was the runner-up in 1:13:42 and Mike Carriglitto, 30, of Laureldale, Pa., took third in 1:15:49.

Hawkins, 23, pulled away from the lead pack a mile into the race and opened the gap on the first major climb at 2 miles.

"The whole race I could see him, but in those conditions it was too hard to close anything," Wagoner said.

Wagoner, the two-time defending champion of the Run Through History 10K in Sharpsburg, also finished second at the Chambersburg Half last year, clocking a 1:12:34.

"I'm in a lot better shape than last year, but I was slower," Wagoner said. "The wind was tough."

Wendy Byers, 31, of Landisburg, Pa., sailed to the women's title in 1:32:27, finishing 6 minutes ahead of runner-up Jennifer Broton, 33, of Olyphant, Pa.

Carl Clark, 42, of New Market, Md., was the men's masters champ in 1:20:14. Kristin Page, 41, of York, Pa., won the women's masters title in 1:46:46.
