Illnesses to close school

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Strep throat and flu have been spreading among students at Faith Christian Academy in Berkeley County, and the school will be closed Friday to be disinfected, administrator Eric Kerns said Wednesday night.

The illnesses started a little more than a week ago at the school off Greensburg Road east of Martinsburg, Kerns said.

"It's been growing ever since," said Kerns, noting that an average of about 50 to 60 students have been out of school each day this week.

The pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade school has about 380 students, Kerns said.

Closing the school will give the staff three days over the weekend to disinfect the facility and give the ill students a chance to recover, Kerns said.
