Fire hall holding soup, pot pie sale

Smithsburg Fire Hall is holding a soup and potpie sale on Saturday, March 11, from 8 a.m. to noon. Available for sale: chicken or ham potpie; soups: vegetable beef, chicken corn, and ham and bean; country ham sandwiches and steamers; homemade pies. Eat-in or Carry-out. Orders may be called in anytime except Saturday to 301-824-5392 (leave a message). Walk-ins are welcome. Food is provided by the Ladies Auxiliary.

South High Class of '71 plans reunion

South Hagerstown High School's Class of 1971 will be celebrating their 35-year class reunion this summer. The reunion is scheduled for Saturday, July 22, at the Sheraton Four Points on Dual Highway in Hagerstown. Invitations will be mailed out by the end of March. The committee is in the process of updating their mailing list. If you want to be assured of receiving an invitation, please call one of the following people so we can verify and update our information: Vickie (Martin) Layton at 301 791-1486; Dianne (Kronawetter) Snyder at 301 791-6257 , or Betsy (Harbaugh) Magaw at 301 797-6089. If you know someone from this class who is living out of town, please pass this information on to them. This was a large graduating class and it is a challenge to keep track of everyone.

Monday, March 13 - "You are the Greatest Generation" with Jackie Willison at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, March 14 - "Pain Medications" with Ita Kavanagh at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, March 15 - Exercise at 9:30 am.; "Movie - Part I" and Popcorn at 10 a.m.

Thursday, March 16 - Bingo at 10 a.m.

Friday, March 17 - Exercise at 9:30 a.m. "Movie - Part II" and Popcorn at 10 a.m. "Shamrock Day."

Cascade Elementary

Cascade Elementary Schools annual auction will be held today, starting at 6 p.m. at the school at 14519 Pennersville Road, Cascade.

All proceeds go to Cascade Elementary School. The silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m.

Physical Education News:

"My, the year is flying by! Just a couple of announcements to keep everyone informed as to what will be happening in the next couple of weeks.

"A big congratulation goes out to our Cascade School Hoop Shoot winners. The third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students all participated in the Elks Hoop Shoot contest during P.E. class.

"Those students in each age group who made the most baskets were the Cascade School winners. These students were then invited to participate in the county shoot-off, which was held this past January in Hagerstown. The school winners were age 10-11 - Frank Johnson and age 8-9 - Toby Anders and Cheyanne Cochran."

Eastern Elementary

Remember, toys and electronics of any kind should be kept at home and not brought to school (this includes trading cards and card games, etc.) Anything brought to school will be given to the assistant principal and will be returned to a parent only. Please help your child remember that toys and electronics must stay at home.

Please, review the Washington County School dress code policy with your child. This can be found in the 2005-06 guide to schools distributed at the beginning of the year. It can also be found on the Washington County Public Schools Web site Additional copies can be obtained upon request.

Congratulations to Mrs. Moore's first-grade class for having the highest percentage of students with perfect attendance for the month of December. Students in her class with perfect attendance for that month earned gift certificates to Outback Steakhouse.

Please remember to sign in and wear a visitor's badge when visiting our school.

In order to ensure a smooth dismissal, parents are to wait in the pick-up lane for car riders or park in the lower parking lot and walk to the door for your child.

Testing for the Maryland State Assessments this week.

Grades three, four, and five will take the Maryland State Assessments:

Math - Tuesday, March 14 and Wednesday, March 15, from 8:15 to 10:30 a.m.

Please make sure students are on time. The school staff would appreciate it if you could arrange doctor appointments, etc., to accommodate the testing schedule.

Smithsburg Elementary has done extremely well over the past three years and the staff hopes students will perform as well this year. Theteachers, staff, parents and students have worked hard to prepare for the state assessments.

School Dress Code - as the warm weather approaches, the school staff encourages parents to review the Washington County Dress Code with your child. The school is extremely fortunate to have air conditioning. Parents, the staff appreciates your support in helping your child choose clothing that is appropriate.
