March 08, 2006|by PEPPER BALLARD

A pregnant prison psychologist allegedly was struck in the face by an inmate during a counseling session Friday at Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown, Maryland Division of Correction Spokesman George Gregory said.

The psychologist was taken to Washington County Hospital following the 1:30 p.m. reported assault at the prison south of Hagerstown. The psychologist's baby is fine and the woman is expected to return to work today, Gregory said.

No charges have been filed against the inmate, a 49-year-old man serving 40 years for homicide, Gregory said.

During the counseling session, the inmate "got agitated," Gregory said. The psychologist ended the session, but when the inmate got up, he struck the woman in the face with his cuffed hands.

"Basically, he struck her with the cuffs," Gregory said.

Gregory said a correctional officer who was with the inmate immediately took him under his control.
