Northern Middle places third in color guard competition

The Northern Middle School Indoor Color Guard was awarded third place in the Keystone Indoor Drill Association competition at Linganore High School on Feb. 4.

The group is under the direction of Danielle Myers-Cox and Jess Sasser.

Poet laureate to read at Western Heights Middle

Michael Glaser, poet laureate of Maryland, will read and discuss his poetry Thursday, March 30, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at Western Heights Middle School, according to a press release from Washington County Public Schools.

The event is free and open to the public.

Glaser was appointed the state's poet laureate in August 2004. He teaches at St. Mary's College of Maryland, and has published more than 400 poems in literary journals, magazines and newspapers.

Glaser also will make a presentation to students and school system staff Friday, March 31, at 8:30 a.m. at South Hagerstown High School.


Bartlett to sponsor competition for students

U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., will sponsor the 2006 Congressional Artistic Discovery Competition for senior high school students, according to a press release from his office.

Artistic Discovery is a high school art competition coordinated by individual members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The competition provides an opportunity to showcase the talents of students in the Sixth Congressional District, according to the press release.

The winners in each of seven categories and the Sixth Congressional District Best in Show will be announced May 15. The eight winners and their families will receive a tour of the Capitol and be invited to attend a reception on Capitol Hill.

The Best in Show winner will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel on Capitol Hill for one year and might be awarded an artistic merit scholarship, in the amount of $3,000 per year, by the Savannah College of Art and Design. The Sixth District Best in Show winner also will be invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception June 28 in Washington, D.C., with other Best in Show winners from around the United States.

The deadline for submitting artwork is April 21. Competition guidelines are posted on Bartlett's Web site at

Student representative sought in Frederick Co.

FREDERICK, Md. - High school sophomores and juniors who attend Frederick County Public Schools may apply to serve as the 2006-07 student representative to the county's Board of Education.

Interested students may contact their high school principal or student government adviser for a nomination packet.

Completed applications may be sent to Michael Bunitsky, Frederick County Public Schools social studies curriculum specialist, at 7630 Hayward Road in Frederick.

The nomination deadline is April 11 at 4 p.m.
