For the record

March 05, 2006

Each year as part of the Martinsburg (W.Va.) VA Medical Center's National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans celebration in February, a King and Queen of Hearts were crowned and recognized throughout the weeklong activities.

This year's King and Queen are World War II Army veterans and patients in the VA nursing home. King John Routhier, age 78, is from Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Queen Lucy Baker, 88, is from Maurertown, Va.

In VA facilities across the nation during Valentine week, men and women of the Armed Forces were honored.

Veterans service organizations and volunteers play a significant role in the annual Salute Program. Last year, for example, volunteers at the Martinsburg center and community nursing homes gave more than 43,000 hours of service to veterans.
