A suspect in a late-night armed robbery of a convenience store on Leitersburg Pike was apprehended a short time later after police say he tried to rob a motel on Dual Highway.

Billy Wayne Smith, 21, no fixed address, was seen putting air in his vehicle's tires at the AC&T/Exxon station on Dual Highway and a vehicle chase began, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

The driver bailed out at Md. 66 and Mount Aetna Road and was taken into custody without incident after a foot chase.

Smith was charged with armed robbery, robbery, first- and second-degree assault and theft of less than $500, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

He was being held Friday night on $220,000 bond, according to a spokesman at the Washington County Detention Center.

In a press release, Investigator Ryan Shifflet said deputies were dispatched to the 7-Eleven at 19340 Leitersburg Pike at 11:30 p.m. Thursday for a report of an armed robbery.

The store clerk told deputies a man fled the store with $150 after threatening to take the clerk's life, police said.

The type of weapon and whether or not it was displayed or recovered wasn't known.

With a tag number provided by a witness, deputies learned the vehicle was stolen and began looking for it.

The vehicle was found shortly after an attempted robbery at the Super 8 Motel on the Dual Highway, which had been reported to Hagerstown City Police, according to Lt. Michael King.

Shifflet said Smith is also charged with a number of traffic offenses.
