The NFSA Coaches Association on Friday named Jefferson High School's Judy Marcus the national high school girls tennis coach of the year for 2005.

"I'm pretty psyched, needless to say," Marcus said. "It's such a cool thing, and it's not just about me, it's about Glen (Edwards, the boys coach), the program, the community, the parents. It's about everybody, and that's what makes it so cool."

Marcus has led the Cougars to 10 consecutive Apple Valley League championships and 16 West Virginia regional titles in 17 seasons on the way to becoming the state's all-time winningest girls tennis coach in dual meets, with more than 300 victories.

Still, news of her national honor was unexpected.

"It just really caught me by surprise," Marcus said. "I knew about the win thing and the traditions of the program. I just got very lucky, hooked up with a great bunch of people and a great school. I've never felt much better."
