Mail Call

March 02, 2006

"In response to the recent Mail Call regarding Conococheague Little League - a decision was voted on and passed by the league board of directors to raise entrance fees by $25 to cover the cost of rewarding those individuals who have, for years, worked extra duty during the league's primary fundraiser, the annual River City Classic in August. At signup, parents who enter their kids have always been informed of the need for help. Parents from each team have traditionally been assigned to help at one game. While most don't have a problem with that, there are some who never help, and a few who always do extra duty. The plan was explained in writing that when the parent showed for their one-game duty during the tournament, the $25 would be refunded. The plan is simple - show up and get your money back. Let me also say that no child would ever be turned away as a result of a financial hardship the extra fee would cause. The league proudly supports our kids and remains a role model for Little League baseball in the state of Maryland with our beautiful facilities, volunteer board, coaches and umpiring staff, and hundreds of hard working parents whose kids deserve the best we have to offer."

"In a Herald-Mail editorial of Feb. 17, the following was said, "the only news readers would get would be feel-good, happy-talk stories that don't ask probing questions because reporters would fear being added to the governor's enemies list." Statewide, that may be true. Locally, the H-M is not on the hit list of any local or elected governmental bodies or individuals, of which I am aware. Perhaps the H-M can explain to its readers why their reporters and editors do not ask probing questions of the local Board of Education or Washington County School System administrators/principals? Is it because the H-M only wants to report 'feel-good, happy-talk stories' given to them by the public information office rather than digging for facts and spending the time and effort to do investigative reporting?"

"I might not have understood what the paper was saying last week, when the state's attorney said he would have to decide whether to seek the death penalty on Mr. Morris, the individual who was accused of killing the correctional officer at the hospital. I don't see why there would have to be second thoughts about seeking the death penalty. I would like for somebody to answer this and straighten me out if I'm misinformed, which I don't think I am."

"To the person who took my winter coat while I was walking at Robinwood: I hope you are enjoying wearing my warm coat since the weather has been so cold lately. Would you consider returning my keys that were in the coat pocket? You can turn them in to any maintenance person or security guard at Robinwood and they will get in touch with me."

"At the Feb. 14 County Commissioners meeting, a very important vote was taken on what the county would require the Westfields developer to pay toward school construction in exchange for being allowed to continue building houses. This was a decision that will affect taxpayers for years to come. If the developer doesn't pay enough for new school construction, the taxpayers will have to make up the difference. "

"Someone called about paying 100 percent of the city tax and 50 percent of the county tax. I think it's a good idea to eliminate the county tax and let the people in Hagerstown pay 100 percent of their burden. Maybe that way the county won't have to make annual donations to the city."

"I'm calling about the hospital. A caller suggests moving it to the Allegheny Energy building area. I agree wholeheartedly, but originally, if I'm not mistaken, to get the doctors to move their offices to Robinwood, the hospital promised the doctors that they would build the hospital out there. That's why the doctors all went to Robinwood, because it would eventually be convenient for them to have their offices right next to the hospital. I hope that it does not materialize. The area cannot stand the traffic and congestion, and the county will have to pay a lot of money to clean it up after they move."

"We should just rename the whole world Planet Hatred instead of Planet Earth, because that's all it is anymore. Everywhere you look, there's nothing but pure hatred."

"Tim Rowland's critique of the opera was priceless."

"I think it's really cool when you call in and it says that the mail box is full. People are really starting to think about things, and I think that's a good thing. It's almost too good to be true. Keep it up, and remember, a conspiracy of silence speaks louder than words. Have the courage to speak your mind. God bless you."
