Boonsboro tax exemption OK'd

March 01, 2006|by TARA REILLY

An area of Boonsboro will be exempt from Washington County's excise tax in an effort to encourage redevelopment in the municipality.

The County Commissioners voted for the exemption of residential and commercial properties in Boonsboro's Town Center zoning district, which is mainly in the downtown area.

"We're doing all we can to support our downtown area," Boonsboro Mayor Charles F. "Skip" Kauffman told the commissioners. "This is another step in that direction.

Kauffman said he hopes the exemption will serve as an incentive for property owners to make improvements to their properties.

The commissioners, through a resolution, named the Town Center district a "redevelopment area," making it eligible for the excise tax exemption.
