Kindergarten registrations slated



CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Chambersburg Area School District is registering kindergarten children for the 2006-07 school year.

Parents of children who will be 5 years of age by Sept. 1, 2006, may call the nearest elementary school or Elementary Services at 717-261-3417 to schedule an appointment.

Registrations will be scheduled from Monday, March 27, through Wednesday, April 5, between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Chambersburg Area School Distict Administration Building, 435 Stanley Ave., Chambersburg.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The Greencastle-Antrim School District will hold kindergarden registration for the 2006-07 school year on April 20 and 21 and April 24 and 25.

Parents may call 717-597-2183 between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. before March 24 for a registration appointment.

Registrations will be held at Greencastle-Antrim Primary School, 504 E. Leitersburg St., Greencastle.

Parents must bring to the registration appointment the child's birth certificate, immunization records, Social Security card and two proofs of residency.

FREDERICK, Md. - Registration for Frederick County Public Schools fall 2006 kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes will be Monday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 7, from 1 to 7:30 p.m. at Frederick County elementary schools.

Registration will continue on school days from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

To enter kindergarden in the fall, a child must turn 5 years old on or before Sept. 1.

Those registering a child will need the child's immunization record, proof of date of birth and proof of residency.

Students prepare for Battle of the Books



Children in Washington County have spent part of their winter reading books in preparation for the 19th annual Battle of the Books, hosted by the Washington County Free Library.

Registration began Nov. 1, 2005, and teams were organized by Jan. 31. Twenty-one teams of children in grades four through six have read 20 books to prepare for this year's contest, which includes both written and verbal competitions.

The written round will be Tuesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Temple at 54 S. Potomac St. The top eight teams go on to compete in the final verbal round on Saturday, March 25, at Eastern Elementary School.

Public schools' report released



The Washington County Public Schools' latest annual report on the 2004-05 academic year has been released.

Copies have been mailed to county residents, and the report has been posted on the school system's Web site at www.wcboe.k12.md.us. The report highlights system and program performance, statistics and goals.

A PDF file of the annual report has been posted on the Web site, along with a survey seeking feedback on the publication.

'Fridays at the Library' planned



Washington County Free Library's next "Fridays at the Library" for home- schoolers will be Friday, March 10, in the computer lab at the library.

The program will focus on Western Maryland's online historical Web site.

The elementary program runs from 1 to 2 p.m., and the high school program runs from 2 to 3 p.m. Middle school students may attend either session.

The library hosts the series of free programs for homeschoolers on the second Friday of each month during the school year. Preregistration is not required.
