Harpers Ferry facility facing budget cuts

February 26, 2006|By Dave McMillion

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -

A National Park Service facility in Harpers Ferry that produces and designs media for national parks across the country will face about $400,000 in budget cuts next year, the facility's director told the Jefferson County Commission Thursday.

The Harpers Ferry Center employs about 173 workers who earn an average of about $80,000 per year, Gary Candelaria said.

Candelaria said one possible way to offset the budget cuts is to have workers who are eligible for retirement consider retiring from the center.

Another option is to find center workers other jobs in the National Park system, Candelaria said.

Candelaria said it is too early to say whether any job layoffs will be required.

The commission agreed to write a letter to National Park Service officials objecting to the budget cuts.
