Bill would allow disabled vets to get lifetime hunting licenses

February 24, 2006|by TAMELA BAKER

ANNAPOLIS - A bill to give lifetime hunting licenses to disabled veterans drew no opposition during a hearing Wednesday in the House Environmental Matters Committee.

Sponsored by Del. LeRoy E. Myers, R-Washington/Allegany, the bill would grant the licenses to veterans who were disabled in combat or who are former prisoners of war. Currently, they are eligible for free licenses but must get new licenses each year, Myers said.

The Department of Natural Resources issued 74 one-year licenses in 2004.

The DNR supports the bill. Paul Peditto, director of the Wildlife and Heritage Service, told the committee it would have no fiscal impact on the department.
