All of the hours of practicing and rehearsals paid off for local students selected as All State musicians. Auditions were held in November and 14 Washington County students made the cut.

They will have the honor of performing with the best student musicians from across Maryland.

"It's a good year. I'm hoping we're on the upswing," said Rob Hovermale, coordinator of visual and performing arts for Washington County Public Schools.

Hovermale said students who typically live closer to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore usually are selected for All State.

The senior ensembles - made up of students in grades 10 to 12 - will rehearse from Feb. 23 to 25, then perform on Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Baltimore Convention Center at the following times - All State Senior Orchestra Concert, 1 p.m.; All State Women's Chorus Concert, 2 p.m.; All State Senior Band Concert, 3 p.m.; All State Senior Chorus Concert, 4 p.m.
