I hope you enjoyed your Valentine's Day. I don't think the weather can make up its mind what it wants to do, so it's been playing with us like a yo-yo!

Holidays this week include George Washington's Birthday on the 22nd.

Indoor yard, bake sale

St. James Brethren Church, 17718 Lappans Road (Md. 68) St. James (between Lappans Crossroads and Downsville Pike), will be holding an indoor yard sale, breakfast, lunch and bake sale on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Hagerstown Lions

Tuesday's meeting will be the official visit of District 22-W Gov. Gary S. "Buck" Fisher, and the club's monthly business and administrative meeting.


Spring Bargain Sale

The Women's Club of Hagerstown will be having its annual Spring Bargain Sale on Friday, March 10, and Saturday March, 11, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Clothing, household items, jewelry and baked goods will be available for purchase.

To order soups and sandwiches, please call the Club office at 301-739-0807 by March 7. Soups include beef barley mushroom, beef vegetable and ham and bean. The cost is $4 a quart or $2 a pint.

Sandwiches include country ham at $2.50 and egg and olive and ham salad at $1.75. Sandwiches will also be available the day of the sale.

The Women's Club holds fundraisers to support the upkeep of the historic clubhouse building at 31 S. Prospect St., which has 18 rooms providing low-cost housing to women in our community. The Women's Club thanks you for your support.

Pancake dinner

A Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the basement of the St. John's Lutheran Church Education Building, 141 S. Potomac St., from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $3.50 for adults, $2 for children 12 and under and includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, one serving of sausage and beverages. Additional sausages may be purchased, as well as baked goods.

Proceeds will go toward the youth group's trip to the National Lutheran Youth Gathering in San Antonio, Texas, in July.

Lenten services

Lent begins Wednesday, March 1. Ash Wednesday services at St. John's Lutheran Church will be held at noon and 7 p.m. Pastor Ed Heim will offer a Lenten series on The Lord's Prayer every Wednesday at noon and 7 p.m., and on Sundays at 8 and 10:45 a.m.

Art garden party

The Valley Art Association at Mansion House in Hagerstown City Park will hold an Open House Garden Party on weekends from March 1 through April 2, featuring an exhibit of floral and garden paintings from local artists.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays

A Tea Reception will be held March 24 and 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Artists will be doing painting demonstrations from floral arrangements.

Lecture next Sunday

The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts will present Debra Newman Ham in a lecture entitled "Is Africa My Home? The Debate about the Colonization of Maryland Blacks in the Nineteenth Century," on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2:30 p.m. This presentation is sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council, with generous support from Columbia Gas of Maryland.
