"This is in response to the caller in Rohrersville. About 2,000 years ago, a great society would cheer and shout at a sport that would often involve death. So if I get my jollies straining a vocal cord or two at a sport that I enjoy, I will considerate it a small price to pay while enjoying my life. Slow down, take a deep breath, and you will live longer."

"If you think lemon harangue pie is good, you should try chocolate harangue pie."

- Fairplay

"There's a storefront downtown across from Hagerstown Trust Bank with a flag displayed. But the flag is incorrectly displayed. The blue field with stars should be on the left, not the right. I wonder if the owner of that storefront would please fix this?"

"I'm wondering why a married man would have his wedding band from a previous marriage on his key chain."

- Hagerstown

"To the women out there who pursue married men with children and break up families, you really are a piece of work."

- Hagerstown

"Bob Bruchey should not be awarded the mayor's job by the Hagerstown City Council just because he's a Republican and he wants it back. He abandoned his own party in the last election, running as a write-in candidate, splitting the vote that defeated Mayor Breichner, who had defeated him in the previous election. Bruchey, in effect, handed the election to Mr. Trump, who couldn't handle the job and has now resigned. Bruchey's attempt to storm the back door of City Hall should not be rewarded by welcoming him in the front door. Without Bruchey's incursion, Breichner would still be mayor and we wouldn't have been subjected to the circus that just rolled up its tent. There's got to be somebody out there who doesn't play politics and is worthy of the job."

"The reasoning that Bob Bruchey deserves to be mayor because he ran second isn't an impressive argument. Bruchey has been second in the last four elections he has entered. That clearly means that the majority of voters don't want him as their representative."

- Hagerstown

"Dick Cheney must have received bad intelligence reports about his fellow hunter's location. That must be what happened, don't you think? Again, God help us. These people make decisions about our country going to war, and can't even make good decisions when they're hunting quail."

- Winchester, Va.

"I'm calling about waitresses. I wonder what people would think if they went into a restaurant and there was nobody to wait on them, and they had to wait on themselves."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I know you probably won't print this because you are a Republican paper. If you get into a car wreck and somebody dies, that's murder. Since Cheney shot his friend 'accidentally,' if the man dies, will Cheney be charged with murder? I doubt it."

"I realize that our City Council has problems, but I sure hope they get their heads together and don't select Bob Bruchey as our new mayor. His true side came out in the primaries, with personal attacks against Trump. We have enough of that in Washington."

- Hagerstown

"The phone number for the Do Not Call registry is 888-382-1222 (TTY 866-290-4236)."

"I just read in the paper about an incident in Waynesboro where the police arrested a boy in an attic. He was asleep, and now he's been arrested for resisting arrest and underage consumption. I think that's going a little bit far. They found this boy asleep in the attic. What reason did they have to be in the attic? The police are completely out of control."

- Harrisonville, Pa.

"How dare we question anything about the Bush administration? I never heard a bigger bunch of whining crybabies in the Republican Party."

- Mercersburg, Pa.

"Haven't correctional officers been complaining for at least three years about the problems they've been having? It was stated that somebody was getting to get hurt or killed. That has now come true. Several inmates have died, and there hasn't been much of a follow-up on those investigations. Now a correctional officer has been killed. In any other state in this great nation, those people in charge would be looking for a job. What is wrong with this state?"

- Hagerstown

"I can't believe I haven't read anything in this column about the Shifler story - or are they just not being printed?

- Sharpsburg

"As a Republican, I voted for Bruchey in the primary. However, I would not support him as a mayoral candidate. Everybody says he came in second. He came in second because people were voting against Trump rather than for Bruchey. Had it been only Breichner and Bruchey running during the general election, I believe that Breichner would have won. Please, we rejected Bruchey - don't put him back in office."
