Last year's Miss Western Maryland, Rachel Ellsworth, went on to be crowned Miss Maryland and represented the state at the Miss America Pageant.

Twelve young women will compete Saturday night to be crowned Miss Washington County or Miss Western Maryland.

They also are competing for the $2,000 scholarships that go with those titles and the chance to become Miss Maryland. The Miss Maryland pageant will be held this summer at The Maryland Theatre.

This weekend's pageants include interview, talent, physical fitness in swimsuit, casual wear, and poise in evening wear competitions, says Barbara W. Carson, publicity chairwoman for the combined event.
