Helen A. Opalka, 83


JUNE 29, 1922-FEB. 11, 2006

Helen A. Opalka, 83, formerly of Mayfield, Pa., and a resident of Broadmore Assisted Living in Hagerstown, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 29, 1922, in Mayfield, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Antionette Musial Hemak.

Her husband, Joseph Opalka Sr., died in 1970.

She was a graduate of Jermyn High School.

She was employed as a seamstress at Mayfield Dress Co.

She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Mayfield.

She is survived by one son, Joseph Opalka Jr. of Littlestown, Pa.; one granddaughter, Annette Opalka; one stepgrandson, Matthew Kelch; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Services will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Ryczak-Harrison Funeral Home Inc., Mayfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Mayfield. The Rev. John Kulavich will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery, Mayfield.

Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.




Emma C. Conrad, 102

Emma Cochran Conrad, 102, formerly of 11504 Hopewell Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Homewood Nursing Home, Williamsport.

Born Oct. 13, 1903, in Middleburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles B. and Emma Lee Ellison Triplett.

Her husband, Walter Hoge Conrad, died in 1967.

She was a member of First Christian Church and Friendly Circle Sunday School class.

She is survived by two daughters, Emma J. Cline of Williamsport and Betty A. Carroll of South Point, Ohio; one son, Berkley H. Conrad of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Maudie L. Shank; four sisters; and two brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Revs. Fred M. Harris and G. David Shreeves will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Joseph W. Skvarka Jr., 58, of 1553 Pin Oak Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at his home.

Born Aug. 20, 1947, in Robertsdale, Pa., he was the son of the late Joseph W. Sr. and Dorothy Thomas Skvarka.

He was a 1965 graduate of Tussey Mountain High School in Saxton, Pa.

He retired from T.B. Woods Sons Inc.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

He was a member of Detrich-Brechbill Post 612 American Legion, St. Thomas, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie M. Gordon Skvarka, whom he married Dec. 17, 1995; two children, Kristian S. Skvarka and Nicole D. Skvarka-Ricker, both of Chambersburg, one stepdaughter, Lori Wiles of Gardners, Pa.; five sisters and brothers, Helen Foreman of Chambersburg, Richard Skvarka of Carlisle, Pa., Marilyn Weist of Breezewood, Pa., Carolyn Matthews of Millcreek, Pa., and Theresa Minnich of Dudley, Pa.; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandson; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia Mort.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg. The Rev. James R. O'Brien will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Hazel M. Eckstine, 86

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Hazel M. Eckstine, 86, of 25 E. Baltimore St., Apt. 13, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at her home.

Born Sept. 5, 1919, in Fredericksburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jerome W. and Mary Florence Johnson Miller.

Her husband, Ralph M. Eckstine, died May 23, 1966. They were married Sept. 14, 1940.

She was a 1938 graduate of Greencastle High School.

She served as the custodian of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle for many years, retiring in 1988.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle, where she was a member of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran in America (WELCA) and the former Women's Bible Class.

She was a member of Greencastle-Antrim Homemakers, Senior Women's Club and Loyal Daughters.
