MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A woman was found dead Wednesday night in the kitchen area of a two-story brick home in Martinsburg after fire broke out there, a fire official said.
Members of the Martinsburg Fire Department found the woman minutes after entering the back of the home at 537 S. Raleigh St., Capt. Steve Canby said.
"They were knocking it down and that's when they came in contact with her," Canby said.
He said firefighters were trying to determine the woman's identity and what caused the fire.
Canby did not say in what position the woman was found in the room, adding that an investigation was continuing.
When firefighters arrived after getting the call at 8:23 p.m., fire was coming out of a first-floor window on the north side of the house, Canby said.
Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 25 minutes, Canby said.
Most of the fire damage was in the kitchen and on the first floor. There was smoke damage upstairs, Canby said.
