Guard member feted at dinner

February 08, 2006

SMITHSBURG - A surprise dinner party was held Saturday night for Sgt. Henry S. Vidal, a member of the Smithsburg Volunteer Community Fire Co., who is home briefly from Iraq where he has been serving with the Maryland National Guard.

Vidal went to Iraq in May and returned in December to the United States, where he was stationed in Georgia before returning home for a two-week stay. He is scheduled to return to duty in Iraq.

Phil Rohrer, fire company president, said the dinner was planned to show support for Vidal, who has been a member of the fire company for three years.

"He's a pretty good kid," Rohrer said, explaining why the dinner was planned for Henry.

In a postcard from Iraq in November, Vidal told his comrades at the fire company that he was in the "good old" infantry.

"Keep on saving lives and fight some house fire for me," Vidal said in the postcard. He signed off with "Peace."

Vidal and his wife, Michelle, have two children, Ally and Gabriel.

His mailing address is Sgt. Vidal, Henry S., Co. B 1-115th IN/TF 1-118th FA, APO, AE 09333.
