Macy's will replace Hecht's at Valley Mall

HALFWAY - The Hecht's store at Valley Mall will become a Macy's this fall, according to a spokesman for Federated Department Stores, which operates both chains.

Federated spokesman Jim Sluzewski said the change is part of Federated's merger with The May Department Stores Co., which took effect in August.

Hecht's was one of several stores operating under the May name.

Because of the merger, Federated will turn Hecht's stores into Macy's and sell some of the unneeded Macy's branches.

Sluzewski said the change in merchandise will be gradual, possibly starting in the summer, when new shipments will be Macy's stock.

New signs will be in place, covered up, ready for the change in names. Sluzewski said the day of the switch hasn't been decided, but it probably will be in September.

Macy's has several private brands, which make up about 20 percent of its merchandise, Sluzewski said.

He said Macy's will become a nationwide fashion store, making it easier to send gifts across the country, especially if they need to be exchanged or returned.

As of Dec. 31, Federated operated 991 stores, including 91 branches in the Hecht's chain, according to a Federated fact sheet.

Federated added 330 Macy's locations through the merger with May, creating a total of about 730 Macy's stores, a news release says.
