CLEAR SPRING - A 17-year-old driver was issued a traffic citation Monday afternoon, following a crash that left a motorcycle rider injured.

The youth, who was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck, was trying to cross U.S. 40 from Rockdale Road to Cedar Ridge Road about 5 p.m., Maryland State Police Trooper 1st Class Robert Care said. The boy was looking west, into the sun, and could not see before pulling out into the road, Care said.

When he pulled out, Lydia Elliott, 52, of Hagerstown, was riding a motorcycle east on U.S. 40, he said.

She struck the front of the boy's truck.

"(Elliott) hit the right front wheel and was thrown, and hit the windshield and then hit the ground," Care said.

Elliott was taken by ambulance to Washington County Hospital, he said. A nursing supervisor there said she had been discharged late Monday.

A nursing supervisor at University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore said Elliott was on her way there at 9:20 p.m.

The boy, whose name was not being released, was issued a citation for failure to yield, Care said.
