February 07, 2006

Three teenagers were charged Monday morning in the attempted theft of a car parked in the 400 block of Mitchell Avenue, the Hagerstown Police Department said in a news release.

Police found three teenage boys inside a car at about 3:20 a.m. after receiving a report that the Dodge Stratus was being stolen from the 400 block of Mitchell Avenue. Once police spotted the teens - ages 14, 14 and 16 - the group fled the car, "allowing it to drift into a parked vehicle," police said.

Not long after, police found two of the teens in a convenience store. After a brief chase, the teens were caught, the release states. The other teen allegedly was hiding in a locked employee restroom in the convenience store and also was caught, police said.

The teens allegedly were runaways from a boys group home, police said.

Police said the teens each were charged with theft of an automobile and malicious destruction of property. The boys were returned to the group home, the release states.
