Beekeeping course planned

BOONSBORO - A beekeeping short course will begin Feb. 13 at the Boonsboro Fire Co., 5 St. Paul St., from 7 to 9 p.m.

Sponsored by the Hagerstown Valley Apian Society and the Eastern Panhandle Beekeepers Association, the course will continue on the next five Monday evenings through March 20.

If necessary, a snow day will be March 27.

The cost is $40 at the door for all family members of the same household. This includes membership in the two sponsoring organizations, textbook and weekly door prizes.

A field day with a chance to get a hands-on look into a beehive will be April 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Mountain Apiary, 6136 Rohrersville Road, Boonsboro.

Course topics will begin with introduction and biology on Feb. 13. Successive topics will include equipment and safety, parasites and healthy bees, seasonal management and products from the beehive.

Class will be postponed should Washington County schools be closed due to weather conditions.
