Choices essay contest winners are announced

The Choices in Colleges and Careers Essay Contest winners have been announced.

The contest was open to all Washington County Public Schools juniors and seniors and the winners receive scholarships.

The winners are:

First place - Ashley Tyler, North Hagerstown High School, $500 scholarship

Second place - Marisa Bender, South Hagerstown High School, $300 scholarship

Third place - Lindsay Steiner, South Hagerstown High School, $200 scholarship

A special $250 scholarship was given to the Washington County Family Center in honor of its 10th anniversary.

The Choices in Colleges and Careers event is held each fall at South Hagerstown High School. The 2005 event drew 1,325 people and had representatives from 111 colleges, universities or career schools. Proceeds from the day totaled nearly $11,000 and were used to establish a chapter of the Future Educators of America in each county public high school.


Career and Technology Center hosts open house

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Franklin County Career and Technology Center, at 2463 Loop Road, will host an open house Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The public will have an opportunity to talk with students and faculty during the open house. There also will be displays and demonstrations.

Saint James School choir set to perform at YMCA

The Saint James School choir will perform Monday, Feb. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Hagerstown YMCA as part of a Black History Month Celebration titled "Our History."

College Savings Plans to host information nights

The College Saving Plans of Maryland and Washington County Public Schools will host four parent information nights about the two college savings plans the state offers.

All four meetings will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The meeting dates and places are:

Thursday - Hancock Middle/Senior High School.

Tuesday, March 7 - E. Russell Hicks Middle School.

Thursday, March 9 - Western Heights Middle School.

Thursday, March 16 - Smithsburg Middle School.
