Pa. extends comment time on manure law

January 31, 2006

HARRISBURG Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff, at the request of the Nutrient Management Advisory Board, has extended the public comment period to Feb. 16, for the Commercial Manure Hauler and Broker Certification Law.

The law requires that all owners and employees of a commercial hauler or broker firm be certified by the Department of Agriculture.

"I invite anyone who has not yet submitted comments to do so, so we can make sure that this important law works for Pennsylvania agriculture," Wolff said.

The department has developed, in cooperation with Penn State's Cooperative Extension Service, a certification program.

Training will be available in a classroom at several sites in Pennsylvania for those seeking certification as a Hauler 3 or Broker 1 or 2.

The dates and sites include:

  • Feb. 17 - in Shippensburg, Pa., at Premier Events, classroom training will begin at 8 a.m. and testing at 4 p.m.; and

  • Feb. 23 - Carlisle, Pa., at Cumberland Cooperative Extension office, the exam will be given at 9 a.m.

Individuals seeking certification as a Hauler 1 or 2 are not required to take the classroom training and may be certified via worksheet or workbook, respectively, the state agency said.

It said materials will be available at the classroom training locations or by contacting the department.
