Student organizes cancer benefit

January 30, 2006

FREDERICK, Md. - Whitney Crist, a senior at Catoctin High School and a participant in advanced music studies in Governor Thomas Johnson High School's Arts and Communications Academy, chose as her senior project an endeavor that suited her career goals and helped a cause.

Whitney organized a benefit concert for the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund. Held at the Frederick Church of the Brethren in mid-December, the concert featured six of the area's instrumental and vocal groups, including The Frederick Catoctones, The Frederick Chorale, The A Capella Showcase Chorus, Mom's Night Out, the Catoctin High School Band with trumpet artist John Pursell, and vocalist Lauren Eberhardt.

"I wanted to do something that would benefit my community," Whiteny said. "A family member was recently diagnosed with cancer and I thought, 'what better way to give back than to assist breast cancer research and care.'"

Funds were generated by donations given at the door by those attending the concert. Whitney presented a check for $2,455 to the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund.
