Proceeds from a daylong rock concert this weekend will help fund the prom at North Hagerstown High School this spring.

The student-run "Battle of the Bands" is Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m. at Northern Middle School. Fifteen local bands, primarily punk, rock and pop groups, will compete for a $100 prize.

The event will help pay for the school's prom, which will cost at least $5,000, faculty adviser Adam Shambaugh said. Traditionally, the junior class picks up the tab, Shambaugh said.

The planning for the show has taken four of the event's organizers - three juniors and one senior - on quite a journey.

All of them had been to shows, but none had ever put one together.

Toni Calendrelle, 17, of Hagerstown, a senior, and her friends, Kaitlyn Perry, Ashley Fogle, and Sarah Schofield - all 16-year-old juniors - were at the mall Monday passing out fliers for the Battle of the Bands. The marketing effort was to continue Thursday at Port City Java, Toni said.

But word of mouth seemed to work just as well. Sarah said they had no problems finding bands.

"I've even had, like random people come up and say, 'Is there a spot left? My band really wants to play,'" Sarah said.

As a senior, Toni has been key to the junior class's fundraising efforts.

"I just wanted to help these guys out," Toni said.

She and Ashley worked their connections in the local garage-band circuit, an underground network of fledgling high school bands that play at churches, Ruritan clubs and Grange halls.

Shambaugh said it was common for students to throw concerts in order to raise money for school-related events.

Last year's junior class held a "Battle of the Bands" contest to fund its prom, which Shambaugh said cost nearly twice as much as this year's.

The class of 2008 also threw a concert last year in order to raise money for their class, Shambaugh said.
