MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Martinsburg City Council on Thursday night amended an ordinance increasing some charges for ambulance services.

The council held a brief public hearing before voting on the new rate structure.

The charge for emergency and nonemergency basic life support was increased $25 to $300, according to the amended ordinance. Emergency and nonemergency advanced life support remains at $500, although a new category - Advanced Life Support II, emergency - was created with a fee of $525.

Also unchanged was the $75 cost of an extra attendant if required for CPR, patient lifting or other services.

The mileage charge was raised from $6 per mile to $8.50, according to the ordinance.

"We do not have an ambulance fee, nor are we creating one," City Manager Mark Baldwin said. The charges only apply to those who require ambulance service, he said.

The ordinance will take effect Feb. 10.
