HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - A Bethesda, Md., woman died Thursday of injuries she received in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 340 in Jefferson County, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Mary Ann Whitesel, 51, was taken to Jefferson County Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va., following the 5:57 p.m. accident, Deputy D.C. Tabler said. She was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m.

Whitesel was driving a 1999 Acura CL two-door sedan that collided with a 2002 Dodge 2500 van driven by Jeffrey L. Stauffer, 51, of Ephrata, Pa., Tabler said. Stauffer sustained a minor facial injury from the deployment of the airbag, he said.

Stauffer and a witness to the accident said Whitesel had stopped at a stop sign and then attempted to make a left turn, driving into the path of the southbound van, Tabler said. Stauffer hit the brakes and swerved to try and avoid a collision, but the van struck the driver's side door of the car and both vehicles came to rest in the highway median, Tabler said.
