Driver in bank crash found guilty

A man accused in October of driving a tractor-trailer into M&T Bank in Clear Spring was found guilty Thursday on one of five charges placed against him.

Francis E. Sam, 38, of 3920 Club Drive in Duluth, Ga., was charged Oct. 26 with failure to stop after an unattended property damage accident, driving on a suspended out-of-state license, failure to notify the owner of the property after an accident, failure to provide written identification after an accident and failure to give insurance information, according to Washington County District Court charging documents.

Sam was found guilty of failing to stop after a property damage accident and sentenced to two months in jail, with two months of the sentence suspended, documents state. Sam also was sentenced to 12 months of supervised probation.

All other charges against Sam were dismissed Thursday.

Sam was charged after Washington County Sheriff's Department deputies said he crashed a Swift Motor Carrier tractor-trailer he was driving into the bank at 121 Mill St.. According to court documents, the crash caused more than $150,000 in damage.

Police said Sam left the bank after crashing into it and was arrested a short time later on Big Pool Road, according to published reports.

A message left for M&T Bank's regional manager Thursday night was not returned.
