"This is for the person who said that Clear Spring needed to be more modern. Maybe they ought to consider the fact that some people are moving to Clear Spring for the less- modern way of life, and to get away from the city and all the problems that come with living in the city."

- Clear Spring

"I read that Justin Marshall was given 25 years. I think he should get about 50 years, because there's no need for that type of violence."

- Hagerstown

"I have sent my angry thoughts to 'You Said It' many times now and find it is a very good way to vent my anger even if they are not published. I thank you for You Said It."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"Reading the Thursday, Jan. 5 Mail Call, I am shocked and disappointed. America is supposed to be the greatest nation on earth, the nation that spreads democracy to others, yet a Hagerstown caller says that we should no longer respect the Geneva Conventions or any other treaties we've signed. Every law-abiding country in the world respects the Geneva Conventions. Many of the countries you talk about that behead and execute people at will are our allies in the war on terror. Maybe we should check on who our allies are first. You must not have been reading the papers when you say that one American guard took a picture of a bunch of naked Iraqis. The Iraqi soldiers were abused against the Geneva Conventions, and it was far more than one guard. Three or four have already been court martialed for it. America must set high standards for itself, because we demand high standards of everybody else. If the U.S. lets down its own people, the rest of the world will have nobody to follow, and America will be a disgrace."

"Thursday, Jan. 5 was the deadliest day in Iraq in four months. I'm so glad that those elections worked. I'm so glad that since President Bush decided to invade an innocent country that was never going to attack the U.S., the three elections in Iraq have made those people so much safer. I'm so glad that the president thought it was all right to let more than 1,400 Americans be killed because the Iraqis needed democracy and stability. Maybe one day Americans will realize that George Bush was wrong about it all, and that the elections have done nothing. If anything, they've made things worse."

- Sharpsburg

"I think it is appalling to throw children's lunches away. It's wasteful, and it's not the children's fault. Have the parents at a meeting and talk to them. I think everybody should march against the school board and get them out of there."

"I'm so ashamed of Hagers-town for allowing the flag at City Hall to hang there like a rag. You'd think we could find a few bucks in the budget for a new one. It's disgraceful."

- Hagerstown

"You're being unpatriotic if you do not watch 'The Daily Show' on Comedy Central, at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., or 11 p.m. Have the courage to speak your mind and challenge the power."

- Hagerstown

"I have a young grandchild in school, and we send his lunch money ahead; maybe enough for two weeks. Before that time is up, we get a notice that he has only two days left. We wonder what he has done with his money. We figure that he's buying extra and running out sooner, so we keep sending more money in. At the end of the year, we don't receive any of that money back. We've often wondered what happens to the money. I've talked to other people who have moved before the next school session who say that they don't get their money back. Who gets the money? Anyway, they need to send letters home and get harsh with the parents, not make the kids feel ashamed in front of other kids. And I'm not blaming the cafeteria workers."

"Why is it that Republican scandals almost always center on ethics, money, and influence peddling that violates constitutional law and endangers our justice system, the very backbone of our form of government? This makes the personal trouble of some Democrats to avoid temptations of the flesh seem petty by comparison, especially in light of their track record on social justice for the average citizen."

- Halfway

"Thumbs down to the Greencastle school district for requiring its students to attend school on Veterans Day and on the Martin Luther King holiday, yet they give two days off for hunting season. It sounds like a mixed up sense of priorities to me."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"To the man who wanted a solution to razor burn: I feel your pain. Try washing your face twice to remove all oils, then soften the whiskers with a hot, wet washcloth. Use soap instead of shaving cream, and rinse the razor frequently with hot water. Shave only once a day so that your face can recover. You could try applying a moisturizer or vanishing cream before bedtime to help condition your face for the morning shave. If your face is badly irritated or broken out, skip a shave to let it recover."
