Nominations sought for local soil conservation board

Nominations for a seat on the Washington County Soil Conservation District Board of Supervisors are being accepted by the Maryland State Soil Conservation Committee.

John Herbst of Ringgold holds the seat now. His five-year term will expire early next year.

Whoever is appointed is to serve until Feb. 12, 2011.

Nominations, due by Jan. 24, should be sent to: State Soil Conservation Committee, Department of Agriculture, 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Room 306, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Any individual or group may submit a recommendation. Forms are available from Jeff Semler, Extension educator, 7303 Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro, MD 21713. Forms also may be picked up at the Soil Conservation District Office in Suite 101 at 1260 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown.

A supervisor must be a county resident.

Nominees "should be able to attend monthly meetings of the Board of Supervisors, and have a knowledge of and a sincere interest in proper land use and the conservation of soil, water and related natural resources," according to a press release.
