Eric Richard Spielman, a freshman at St. Mary's College of Maryland, has accepted a Sam Walton Community Scholarship, sponsored by the Wal-Mart Foundation and awarded through Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores nationwide.

Spielman is a 2005 graduate of Williamsport High School, where he was a STARS receipient was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students, the National Honor Roll and the National Achievement Academy in history and government, won a Washington County Academic Excellence award and was a four-year member of the wrestling team. He is also an Eagle Scout.

Spielman is majoring in political science at St. Mary's.

The Key Club at the Franklin County Career & Technology Center recently held a canned food drive for the Salvation Army. To make it more fun, they sponsored a competition between the shops. The shop with the most items per student won an ice cream sundae party for the entire shop. A total of 831 items were collected.


The shop with the most items per student was Electronics, with 18 items per student. The Culinary Arts shop and instructors, Mike Tosten and Ron Berger, sponsored the ice cream sundae party.

Zach Taylor and Cortney Krall were co-chairs of the event. Abigail Stern, daughter of Lewis and Vicki Stern of Chambersburg, Pa., has been awarded a Tuition Equalization Scholarship to attend Bluffton University, Bluffton, Ohio, in the fall.

Abigail will graduate from Chambersburg Area Senior High School in the spring. She has been active in National Honor Society, band, glee club, Mu Alpha Theta, Camera Club, and Bible Club. She plans to continue her interest in music while a student at Bluffton.

Ashley Schweinhart of Hagerstown graduated from Coastal Carolina University, Conway, S.C., on Dec. 10 with a Bachelor of Science degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Sarah Severn of Monrovia, Md., graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Wyman Harden Herring III of Hagerstown graduated from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill., on Dec. 17 with a Bachelor of Science degree in health care.

Travis Hunt Stoner graduated Aug. 26 from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., with a doctorate degree in physical therapy.

He is a 1998 graduate of Smithsburg High School. Stoner is employed by Winchester Medical Center as a physical therapist.

Ryan Lipella of Smithsburg recently received two national awards. Ryan, who attends St. Maria Goretti High School, has been nominated to Who's Who Among American High School Students, and was also selected for induction into the 2005/2006 National Honor Roll. Only five percent of the nation's high school students receive these honors. Award winners must earn a 4.0 or higher grade-point average.

Ryan's academic biography will be printed in the fortieth edition of Who's Who Among American High School Students, which is published nationally, along with an opportunity to receive college scholarship money.

Ryan was nominated for these awards by Jay Heefner, director of guidance at St. Maria Goretti.

Ryan is the son of Ron and JoAnn Lipella of Smithsburg, and the grandson of Marguerite Lipella of Hagerstown.
